Richa S. Mukherjee’s extremely hilarious detective novel ‘Kanpur Khoofiya Pvt. Ltd’ introduces us to the Tripathi family, whose each member is exceptionally crazy. Amongst them is our protagonist Prachand, the most composed member of the Tripathi family. He runs a private detective agency with the help of his wife.

The Tripathi clan consists of the head member Mr. Dinbandhu Tripathi, who never fails to humiliate Prachad for his failed attempt at clearing IIT. Next comes his brother Dinanath Tripathi, always playing the role of a saviour for Prachad. Then we have Rachna Tripathi, Prachand’s mother and a proud member of the Gwaltoli Gilehris Whatsapp group. And to spoil Rachna Tripathi’s carefully laid plans, we have Rampyari Tripathi, her mother-in-law and whose life lies in a secret trunk. Next in the Tripathi clan is Vidya, Prachad’s wife and his helping hand in running his detective agency. Lastly, we have Bhushan, Prachand’s younger brother who is said to have lost all sanity and calls himself the Justin Beiber of Kanpur. This crazy family residing in the Awadh Niwas, along with their cow Hirwa, has no idea that the peaceful environment prevailing at Awadh Niwas will soon fluctuate.

Most of the cases handled by Prachand consisted of tailing unfaithful spouses or tracking missing pets until one day, when a mysterious stranger dropped by their door with a case to tail the famous actress Shailaja Kapoor. Considering the huge ransom offered to Prachand, he accepted the case. But, during his watch, the actress went missing. Unknowingly, Prachand and his wife fell into a trap and found themselves in the middle of all the mess. Being at the wrong place at the wrong time, they were labelled as prime suspects and were on the run from the police. How will they prove their innocence? And how did Shailaja Kapoor go missing all of a sudden? Will Prachand be able to put the missing pieces together? Read the book to find out.

My view- Like I mentioned, this book came out to be hysterically funny, which was absolutely unexpected from a detective novel. And what unique characters! They made me laugh out loud throughout the book.

I tried to find drawbacks but utterly failed in doing so. The writing and story telling couldn’t get better. With a very simple language, the author has made such an impact that you cannot get over the book anytime soon after completing it. The whole of Tripathi clan was extremely crazy. I loved the bond that Prachand and Vidya shared. However, I felt that the book has a typical Bollywood ending but we could do with that. There’s drama, there’s action, there’s comedy. It was a complete package (a paisa-wasool-book). I want to tell more about the book but I am afraid that I might spill out spoilers in excitement. So, here’s a book recommendation for everyone. It’s a must pick even if you are not a big detective novel fan.

My rating- 4.4/5
